Our highest honour

What links Sir David Attenborough, Aung San Suu Kyi, Sir Ian McKellen and Ellie Simmonds? They are all honorary graduates of the University of Bath.

Every year we award honorary degrees to those remarkable men and women who merit special recognition for their achievements. Not only to acknowledge their success but also to reflect our values and to inspire our community.

Their accomplishments are a source of great pride to us, and we know that by accepting a degree from the University of Bath, they take equal pride in ours.

“I am honoured to have been made a Doctor of Literature almost 30 years ago by this splendid University in this delightful city of Bath, and I’m sure the University will continue to go from strength to strength”

Dame Maggie Smith

To mark our 50th anniversary the Department of Development & Alumni Relations created a commemorative publication to celebrate all those scientists, engineers, businessmen and women, politicians, actors, musician and more, who have chosen to be a part of our community.

We hope that it will act both as testament to the part they have played in the success of our first half century, and as an invitation to look further with us to our successes to come.

“I was absolutely thrilled as well as honoured to be asked to receive an honorary degree. I have looked on afterwards with great pride at the University’s achievements
